Scheduling and budgeting go hand and hand when prepping your project. The process usually begins with a line producer or producer breaking down a script by; estimated days, locations, special needs at those locations, characters, crew, VFX, vehicles, wardrobe, special considerations such as FX or specialized hair, makeup and wardrobe, time period, etc..
With the information from this breakdown, you’ll be better able to build your one-liner (shooting schedule stripboard) as well as your estimated budget.
This prep stage is also when you should be discussing costs/bids and projected pipeline with your editor(s), sound mixer, postproduction supervisor and/or potential post facilities ahead of production to better gage and stick to your schedule and to your budget.
Planning and knowledge are key to troubleshooting along the way and to avoid ‘fixing it in post.’
You will find more details in The Guide to Managing Postproduction for Film, TV & Digital Distribution on prep, production, data management, editorial, VFX, postproduction, deliverables… and all the in between.
