On set production is divided into zones and sub zones, restricting groups to smaller numbers (i.e. cast who cannot wear PPE and those working directly in contact with them; wardrobe, hair, make-up, DP, director, sound, camera, script supers, dolly grips, background talent, etc.) This also affects the amount of time crew can be on set together in a one specific location.
The rules within these Zones vary based on the type of production (film, series and unscripted).
Zone A – A1, A2, A3 – based on how close and how much exposure you will have to the most vulnerable members of your cast & crew.
Zone B – team who have limited access to working sets and never when Zone A are not protected with PPE, limited crew; rigging, set dressing, striking, etc.
Zone C – team members who have less interaction with on set Zone A and B crew, such as production offices, construction, work trucks, etc.
Zone D – focuses primarily on crew who do not have direct interaction with the production crew. This would include post-production facility staff, VFX, animation, etc.
While Zone A must test regularly, Zone D will be subject to testing based on their facility’s protocols.
Outside Zones A-D (focusing outside the set, homes, hotels where cast & crew are when not working directly on set).
Post-production crew are encouraged to work remotely where possible. Videoconferencing is recommended for most screenings, notes, spotting sessions and meetings, as well as for marketing, publicity and press junkets. Editing should be done at home offices with appropriate upgrades for security and secure transmission (see MPAA guidelines). It is also recommended that ADR and VO be done remotely.
This Covid-19 protocol information is updated regularly and is available at your respective union/guild/facility, as well as with individual state resource sites. Note that many of these sites also include information on SBA and other assistance.
